SWEET Solution to Reducing Emissions from the Waste Sector

A new tool developed by Abt Global will help municipal leaders curb emissions from the solid waste sector, thus reducing contributions to local air pollution and global climate change. Working with SCS Engineers on behalf of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Climate & Clean Air Coalition Municipal Solid Waste Initiative (Waste Initiative), Abt developed the Solid Waste Emissions Estimate Tool (SWEET) to measure and analyze emissions of methane, black carbon, and other pollutants from sources across the sector. These sources include dumpsites and landfills, the third-largest source of man-made methane emissions, and open garbage burning, a key source of black carbon emissions.

To effectively reduce these emissions, city municipal leaders must complete the difficult tasks of quantifying them and measuring the effects of reduction efforts. SWEET provides the best available techniques and methods for calculating emissions from landfills and dumpsites, and for evaluating future scenarios to mitigate emissions.

The Waste Initiative unites national and local governments, international organizations, and other partners to help cities improve solid waste management and reduce emissions. It does this by providing technical assistance, capacity building support, networking opportunities, and access to tools such as SWEET.

Join Abt Global’s Joe Donahue as he demos SWEET in a webinar hosted by the International Solid Waste Association on behalf of the Waste Initiative.
