CDC’s National Center for Health Statistics Awards Abt Global Team Contract to Support Clear and Accessible Health Data

Rockville, Md.  –  The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) awarded an Abt Global-led team a contract to support its health communications initiatives aimed at increasing clear, plain, and accessible communications for the American public.

The Abt team, a partnership with McKing Consulting, will support the NCHS website modernization initiative to make data more accessible and user friendly for the public. Under this two-year, $6 million contract, the Abt team will assist NCHS with answering inquiries promptly, clearly, and accurately. Abt will provide staff and services to assist NCHS in developing promotional materials and marketing campaigns. Abt also will provide communication services in support of internal and external inquiries and publication inventory and distribution; expertise in digital content delivery; and evaluation of dissemination efforts.

“Over the past few years, CDC has gained many lessons learned and deep expertise in how to communicate with the American public,“ said Shelly Spoeth, principal associate and strategic communications lead at Abt Global and a member of the leadership of the Society for Health Communication. “We are taking those lessons and combining them with health communications best practices to ensure access to easy-to-understand information. That will enable people to make fact-based decisions about their health.”

NCHS is the nation’s principal health statistics agency and a critical public resource for health information. NCHS collects, analyzes, and provides timely, relevant, and accurate data about a wide range of issues, including COVID-19; health insurance coverage; health conditions such as obesity, hypertension, and HIV status; disability status; exposure to environmental hazards; leading causes of death; and infant mortality.

The data NCHS collects includes birth and death certificates, health care facilities and providers, medical records, personal interviews, mail and telephone surveys, and standardized physical examinations and laboratory tests. This process, which complies with federal privacy laws, provides a broad perspective to help government agencies and the public understand the population’s health from birth to death, including overall health status, lifestyle, exposure to unhealthful influences, the onset and diagnosis of illness and disability, and the use and financing of health care and rehabilitation services.
