Improving Health through Integration

Diana R. Silimperi, MD
International Health Division Vice President The March 2016 issue of Global Health: Innovation to Impact focuses primarily on Abt’s successes in creating and implementing integrated health solutions. The topic is timely, as governments and organizations are convening to halt the spread of the Zika virus through integrated health solutions. Recent guidance from WHO advised stopping Zika through “integrated approaches that tackle all life stages of the mosquito and fully engage communities.” Read about how Abt Global can provide evidence-based solutions to this public health emergency.
Using integrated approaches in health uses less time and resources, and allows providers to address health needs of their clients in a more holistic way, among other benefits.
Several of the articles in this issue demonstrate Abt’s commitment to integrated health. In Nigeria for example, we assessed the ability of public health facilities in five states to deliver services in maternal and child health, family planning, and reproductive health. In Jordan, we integrated family planning messages with breast cancer awareness and prevention messages and reached more than 4,000 women. In Papua New Guinea, we helped form a committee of women representing provinces across the country to find solutions to domestic violence and gender inequality.
We have seen first-hand that using integrated approaches can improve the health and well-being of people worldwide. I am excited to see how these initiatives will continue to improve health outcomes.
