This report uses the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) evidence framework to help decision-makers identify effective afterschool programs. Abt and our colleagues found there is a substantial set of afterschool programs with evidence of effectiveness, including branded and unbranded programs. Taken together, they improved a variety of outcomes in areas ranging from mathematics and reading/English language arts achievement to physical activity/health to school attendance and graduation to social and emotional competencies.
This project was supported by a grant from the Wallace Foundation. More information about the project can be found on their website.
