Fiji Social Infrastructure Program (FSIP)

The Challenge

Fiji is highly vulnerable to natural disasters and the worsening impacts of climate change. Cyclones, floods and droughts are already common, and climate change is predicted to exacerbate all weather-related hazards in Fiji. These threats pose significant, ongoing challenges to Fiji’s health and education infrastructure.

The Approach

As part of the Australia-Fiji Vuvale Partnership, the Fiji Social Infrastructure Program (FSIP) works with the Government of Fiji to deliver quality, inclusive, climate- and disaster-resilient hospitals, clinics and school—locally designed and built.

FSIP provides project management of the design and construction phase, ensuring broad consultation on the scope of infrastructure investments. The Abt-managed program also offers opportunities for income generation and direct employment in construction of school and health facilities and through supply chains. 

FSIP also supports improved systems and processes in Education and Health Ministry Asset Management Units to sustainably scale up construction of climate- and disaster-resilient infrastructure.

The Results

FSIP seeks to achieve the following outcomes: 

More diverse students use quality, accessible and climate resilient facilities, in targeted Fiji schools.

Education and Health Ministry Asset Management Units have improved systems and processes to maintain their facilities and manage new climate-resilient capital works. 

Diverse community members use quality, accessible and climate-resilient health facilities in targeted Fiji hospitals and health clinics. 

Local businesses, women’s groups and community members earn increased income from their participation in building and supplying new infrastructure.
