In November, staff hosted a meal and activities for families staying at The Inn. In December, employees assembled gift kits for young patients participating in research at the NIH Clinical Center.
Linkages to Learning: Each December, employees support a holiday drive for Linkages to Learning and Montgomery County Public Schools in Maryland, collecting gifts, school supplies, and household essentials for students and families facing financial pressure.
Josephine’s Safe Haus: Located in Papua New Guinea, Josephine’s Safe Haus provides shelter for women and children affected by sorcery accusation–related violence. Founded more than 20 years ago, the organization offers safety for people in crisis. Applying Expertise for Good
We’re proud to continue our partnership with Break Through Tech, which helps undergraduate students build skills and experience for careers in AI and technology. In 2025, Abt staff served as mentors and challenge advisors for students participating in the organization’s AI Studio program, guiding teams through applied data science and machine learning projects with real-world relevance.
One team used natural language processing and machine learning to analyze publicly available Reddit data, identifying language patterns associated with emotional distress and potential mental health crises. Students explored text classification, sentiment analysis, and model evaluation while considering privacy, ethics, and responsible AI practices.
Across the cohort, students worked through the full data science lifecycle – from data preparation and feature engineering to model testing and stakeholder presentations. They assessed model performance, examined potential sources of bias, and translated technical findings into clear, actionable insights.
Working alongside Abt mentors, students gained experience navigating real-world analytics challenges. The partnership strengthened technical and professional skills while helping prepare the next generation of AI practitioners to apply data-driven approaches to complex, human-centered challenges.
Together, these efforts reflect how Abt combines resources, expertise, and employee commitment to create meaningful and lasting impact in the communities we serve.
