PROJECT
Fiji Program Support Platform
The Challenge
The Fiji Government’s National Development Plan (2025-29) aims to deliver improved social wellbeing and greater prosperity to Fijians, aligned to the Sustainable Development Goals.
To realise these ambitions, Fiji needs to continue to address a range of development challenges including limited economic opportunities, particularly in rural areas. Government of Fiji objectives include improving gender equality, preventing and responding to gender-based violence, and increasing representation of women in leadership.
Fiji is also one of the most disaster-prone nations in the world and highly susceptible to climate variability. With an expanding and aging population, demands on Fiji’s health system will grow, and more children will need to be schooled. Both will impose additional costs on the Fiji government.
The Approach
The Abt-managed Fiji Program Support Platform implements a portfolio of Australian Government-funded development programs, in alignment with Fiji's national priorities and the Australia-Fiji Vuvale Partnership.
The Platform manages approximately 50 per cent of Australia’s bilateral development assistance to Fiji, including sector programs in basic education, scholarships and Australia Awards, health, disaster response, climate adaptation, social infrastructure, and technical assistance to improve public sector governance.
Platform modalities are flexible and responsive to emerging Government of Fiji priorities, and able to respond to significant external events, such as natural disasters or health security threats. Platform-wide activities will be locally driven, address climate risks and promote climate action and outcomes in gender equality, disability and social inclusion (GEDSI).
The Results
Established in 2025, the Fiji Program Support Platform aims to:
- Deliver sector program outcomes, including through supporting strategic coherence, planning, partnerships management, data and learning across the portfolio of investments.
- Prioritise gender equality, disability-inclusive development, and climate and disaster resilience in its systems and practices. This includes in sector programming and engagement with selected Government of Fiji agencies.
- Administer timely and efficient programming that yields value for money, maximises use of local supply chains, and supports good governance and public diplomacy, effective decision-making and risk management.
